Now that exams are finished, one would think that I have a great deal of knitting time on my hands. Unfortunately, this has not been the case. Since Friday morning, I have been cleaning my house like a madwoman. Part of it has to do with the fact that we had mold growing on our windowsills and in the closet (EWWW) due to poor air exchange in the house. (Don’t worry, none of it even got close to my yarn!) Also, DH and I are going to be moving our bedroom to the basement for the summer, so I’ve had to clear out the basement rec room. The bedroom is next. Finally, we’ve been giving Remi a bit more room to wander in the house, so if I was going to let her do that, I needed to clean “her” room so she wouldn’t chew on things.

Speaking of the furry wonder, she is currently having a nice relaxing snooze on the couch. We brought her and Kali to my parents’ place today so that they could run and play and hopefully get some of that fat off of them. I also brought them for a walk this evening, during which they were VERY GOOD GIRLS. One man passing by commented, “Wow, those are some BIG puppies!” To which I replied, “Oh, yes.” Despite a large number of distractions, for it was a nice day and many people were out and about, my girls made their mama proud.

And speaking of mamas…ha. I am working on a Mommy Snug sweater for myself, for the future. I won’t have a bun in the oven for a while, but at least I can plan for it and have a nice sweater to wear once “Elvendork” makes his/her way into existence. (If you don’t get the Elvendork bit, this might help: http://www.snitchseeker.com/harry-potter-news/potter-prequel-now-available-online-to-read-updated-57160/. DH and I started calling FBB that because it’s funnier that way, I guess, and easier than Future Baby Bee.) I bought 7 skeins of Malabrigo Rios in “Lettuce” for this sucker. OUCH, says my wallet. MMMM, says my skin. Fair deal.

I am a little sad right now because I will not be able to go to the Renzo Gracie Invitational. 😦 Remi needs to get spayed and my work won’t let me get the time off, so these two factors are inhibiting me from going. Oh, well. There shall be other fights, and perhaps in-house tournaments to attend before I make an ass of myself internationally. 😉

Speaking of the puppy, she is doing better all the time. She has only made 2 messes this week, and prior to that she hadn’t made any all week. She is also calming down quite a lot, and I think that’s because a) we’ve been playing with her A LOT and b) it’s been too hot for her to get out of control. Sadly, this has also meant a lot of vacuuming…well, sadly for her and Kali, because they HATE the vacuum!

In between taking care of my girls, working my ass off in the gym and at work, and keeping my house in order, I have also been working on a correspondence chemistry course. No – not a high school level course like I took last summer. This is Clinical Chemistry, which I am taking because I’d rather do it over the summer on my own time than take it during the school year. The fact that it is a full-year course being condensed into a single semester doesn’t hurt, either.

On the knitting front, I learned to spin using a drop spindle a few weeks ago and I’m having a blast! I bought a spindle and some roving from Maine Woods Yarns several months ago, but the spinning instructions confounded me so I gave it up quickly. Then Sarah and Andrea-of-the-hideous-variety taught me, and before long I spun up all of my roving. Since I’m on my yarn fast still, I can’t even get roving, but I have a lot queued in my Loopy wishlist so let’s see if I can wait until December…

Today I picked up the sleeve for my seamless sweater that I started at the Fling. God, I missed it. Finally, I am finished with a plenitude of gifts for other people, and can work on my own stuff!

The puppies are sleeping. Oh my God, Remi is getting HUGE. At her last vet appointment (2 weeks ago), she weighed in at 35 lbs. AAAAAH!

Today is my little nephew Quinn’s birthday. He is 1 year old today! Around this time last year, I was sitting in the movie theatre watching “Star Trek” when Ginger called to say she had had a c-section and her little man was just fine. So happy birthday, my sweet little nephew. Auntie Ana will be working on the quilt she started LAST year, to get it to you by the end of the month. ^-^

In a bit of a break from tradition, I’m not going to focus too much on knitting for this post. Instead, I’m gonna talk a bit about another one of my passions…Brazilian jiu jitsu. I’ve been taking classes since August ’09, and in January I received the first stripe on my white belt. This weekend, there is a seminar given by Pat Cooligan, a black belt from Ottawa, and I’m hoping that I’ll be receiving my second stripe there. I hope that my instructors know how hard I’ve been working for it.

But ranking isn’t as important to me as you’d think. Right now, what’s focusing my attention is the Renzo Gracie Invitational tournament, taking place in New York next month on the 26th of June. I had planned on going in November, but they bumped up the gi-only portion of the tournament. So now, I have to focus on learning some slick moves, and also on losing quite a bit of weight if I don’t want to be placed in the heavyweight/”free for all” category. Yikes!!!

Have a great Wednesday, everyone. 🙂

Puppy love

This is my new baby, Remi:

We went and got her on Wednesday night. Eric and I were listening to Canada spank Russia 7-3 as we drove with our new baby girl in the car. ^-^ Big sister Kali is taking some time to get used to her, but for the most part they are getting along well. They play bite-face for hours and hours, tire each other out, go for a nap, and then start all over again. It’s freaking adorable.

Here we see miss Kali playing with her baby sister in the yard:

I think I am going to make them matching sweaters for Xmas. By then, Remi ought to be big enough that I won’t have to worry too much about measurement. But then again, she has some German shepherd in her so she might even grow up to be bigger than Kali! We’ll have to see.

I feel kind of crappy, though, because I had to leave Eric alone with the two of them until later tonight. I had class from 11:30 to 2:30, and now I’m waiting for my friend Rebecca to be finished her last class so that we can go to practice lab together at 4:30 for an hour or so. If that weren’t enough busy-ness, I’m also going to my SnB for 7:30. There really isn’t much point in going home between practice lab and SnB, because it takes me half an hour to drive home from the college. Say we finish at 5:30, 6:00-ish. By the time I get home, it’ll be 6:30 and I will only have half an hour with hubby and the puppies before I have to leave again. Luckily, Eric is off today so he is able to take care of the wee ones. Tomorrow when he goes on night shifts, it’ll be my turn. Payback time! 😉

Ooh, I am also excited because there will be a Saturday morning BJJ class tomorrow! This is something that began last week, but I couldn’t go because I was working. I plan on going on the alternate weekends where I don’t work…although apparently I might be getting laid off soon, so perhaps it will not be so easy to afford the gym membership. We’ll see. I want to try and get a job with the health unit or something this summer, which could be really, really, really nice.

I think that’s it for now. I guess you could say that as soon as I leave the college tonight, I’ll officially be on READING WEEK!!!!! I’m so excited! Although, I will be working super hard on my final assignment for Chronic Health Challenges, a paper worth 60% of my final mark. Holy crap!!!
